Hemp Oil vs Hemp Seed Oil – What’s the Difference?

Hemp oil and hemp seed oil are very similar. So similar, the terms are commonly used interchangeably. There is however, one main difference between these two oils which is important when you go to purchase them. Before we talk about the difference, let’s quickly define these two oils.

Hemp Oil

Hemp oil is made from breaking down and extracting all parts from the hemp plant, not the marijuana plant. It can contain hemp seeds [and thus hemp seed oil] but it’s mostly all other parts of the hemp plant. Hemp oil is full of phytonutrients and cannabinoids. The cannabinoids found in hemp oil are the reason why so many people want to supplement with it.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is made from only the seeds found in the hemp plant. Hemp seed oil also has many health benefits like amino acids, protein, fiber, and more. It is very common in cooking, and makes an excellent natural alternative to any unhealthy cooking oil.

The Difference Between Hemp Oil and Hemp Seed Oil

Though hemp seed oil is nutritious and very healthy, it is lacking in one compound which many people are looking for when they go to purchase hemp oil, cannabidiol (CBD). Hemp seed oil does not contain any CBD. If you have tried hemp oil in the past, and didn’t notice much of a result, it is possible you accidentally purchased hemp seed oil.

How to Tell the Difference

Typically, hemp oil is sold as a supplement in smaller containers like tinctures or concentrates. They are also found in foods like gummies, chocolates, and more. Hemp seed oil on the other hand is typically found in larger containers as it is much cheaper to source and sell. It is most commonly used as a healthy cooking alternative.

Hemp seed oil also tastes better than hemp oil. It has a lighter taste and is more nutty/earthy. Hemp oil tastes way more earthy and thus has more of a grass/dirt kind of a taste to it. Luckily, there are natural ways to flavor hemp oil, like these tinctures or to hide it in edibles so it is more easily enjoyed.
